The dramaturge Iris Laufenberg becomes the new director of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin.
She should take over the house for the 2023/2024 season.
"She will be the first woman to direct the fortunes of this theater," said a message from Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer (left) on Friday.
Laufenberg currently heads the theater in Graz, Austria.
Before that, she headed the renowned Berlin Theatertreffen for several years.
She was "not a stranger to our city," said Lederer.
Under her leadership, the Schauspielhaus Graz became the partner theater of the Autorentheatertage at the Deutsches Theater in 2019.
With actors such as Ulrich Matthes, Maren Eggert and Sophie Rois, the Deutsches Theater is one of the largest stages in the country.
Laufenberg will succeed Ulrich Khuon, who has headed the house since 2009 and has extended his contract by one year until 2023.
Iris Laufenberg was born in Cologne in 1966 and studied applied theater studies in Gießen.
She worked at the Schauspiel Bochum, the theater in Bremen and for the Bonn Biennale.
From 2002 to 2011 she directed the Berlin Theatertreffen.
The meeting is considered the most important theater festival in German-speaking countries.
At the Schauspielhaus Graz she puts the focus on contemporary drama and founded the annual Graz Dramatists Festival when she took up her directorship in 2015.
