After a child's body was found in the Wümme in Rotenburg in Lower Saxony, the boy's mother was investigated for manslaughter.
The 40-year-old is suspected of having killed her four-year-old son, as the public prosecutor in Verden announced.
The boy's body was recovered from the river on Friday night.
As the prosecution announced late in the evening, an investigating judge ordered the mother to be temporarily placed in a psychiatric hospital.
The woman had stayed with her son in the hospital in Rotenburg.
However, she suddenly disappeared with the child on Thursday evening.
The hospital then reported to the police.
The woman was then found around 11 p.m. in the city - without the boy, as the prosecutor further announced.
There was then a search operation that soon led the police to the place where the child was found.
According to the public prosecutor's office, the background to the case is still open.
The investigators hope to gain further knowledge from the autopsy of the corpse, which is therefore planned for the weekend at the earliest.
A spokesman for the public prosecutor's office said that the boy was "in need of treatment" about the reason for the hospital stay.
