Pfizer's announcement today (Monday) that its Corona vaccine is 90 percent effective in preventing virus infection has surprised many, as it has far better results than experts around the world expected.

Pfizer, and its German partner BioNTech SE, are the first drug companies to show success in a major clinical trial in the fight against the global epidemic, and the expectation is that the vaccine will provide protection against virus infection for at least a year.

But the really burning question is when will it be ready for use, in the world and here in the country.

The Pfizer trial, which began July 27, included 43,538 participants with 94 verified Corona cases.

To date during the third phase of Pfizer's clinical trial (and unlike some of the competing vaccine trials) no evidence of safety issues or significant side effects has been observed.

They found that among the people infected with Corona in the experiment so far, 90 percent were in the control group, meaning they received the placebo vaccine (dummy).

They further discovered that a week after the second dose of the vaccine, it was already found to be effective.

In the next stage, the experiment is expected to continue until the number of verified patients among its participants reaches 164 (control group).

They will also check how severe the patients' symptoms are, and whether the vaccine can also benefit those who have been infected with the virus in the past.

Additional safety checks are needed.

Despite the very encouraging results, and quite amazing it has to be said, until the vaccine becomes available to people it will take some time.

An application for emergency approval for drug use will be submitted to the FDA only after further safety tests have been performed, which can take several more weeks.

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer hopes to produce about 50 million vaccine doses by the end of the civil year - and has already started production, and another 1.3 billion doses in 2021.

"Less than a year has passed and there is a vaccine on the horizon"

"First of all, it's important to emphasize that this is a press release," said Dr. Erez Gerty, an immunologist and head of science communication at the Davidson Institute for Science Education. "Pfizer published the data and they have not yet been peer-reviewed.

On the face of it, this sounds like good news, but one should take them on a limited warranty and wait for the official results.

What is true, it certainly is impressive not yet been a year and already have a vaccine on the horizon. "Gertie estimated first courses of the vaccine came on the market as soon as he is given permission emergency from the FDA, the most optimistic scenario Might have been a couple of months.

Gertie says that although happiness has a few more Steps until the vaccine reaches people. "Pfizer's vaccine is based on a new mRNA technology. This is a technology that has not been approved before and this is the first time it will be approved for use in humans.

In addition, this specific vaccine requires special conditions like deep cooling.

It adds a layer of complexity in terms of storage and distribution. "

Another and very critical complexity is that a lot of doses of the vaccine are needed.

"According to estimates by the World Health Organization, 2 billion doses are needed to deal with the epidemic, and Pfizer will not be able to produce such a quantity in a short time and the populations that will receive it will have to be prioritized. "There are a few more companies in the race, so we may hear similar news from other companies soon."

The first to receive the vaccine are likely to be U.S. and German citizens. Israeli citizens, on the other hand, will have to wait, as Israel has so far signed agreements to purchase the vaccine with three pharmaceutical companies - Modern, which led at the start of the race. Ness Ziona is working to find a vaccine, and as far as is known, Israel does not have a similar agreement with Pfizer.
