The US actor Alec Baldwin, who has played the incumbent US President Donald Trump on the comedy show "Saturday Night Live" for years, has expressed relief over his electoral defeat.

"I do not think that I was ever so overjoyed to lose a job," wrote the 63-year-old on Sunday night via the short message service Twitter.

Previously, he had already published a picture taken from the television on Instagram, showing how the democratic challenger Joe Biden is declared president.

"Amen," Baldwin commented simply.

On Sunday night, however, the actor was seen again in his role as Trump on "Saturday Night Live" - and left open whether it would be his last appearance as US President.

"As anyone who died in the middle of Tuesday knows, I was re-elected President of the United States," quipped Baldwin as Trump on the show.

At the beginning of the vote count on Tuesday, the incumbent president was still ahead in some states, later Biden won these states.

Actor Jim Carrey took on the role of Biden on "Saturday Night Live".

"I just say: I'll see you in court"

After the address, Baldwin played the song "Macho Man" on the show as Trump at the piano and then said goodbye with the words: "This is not: goodbye America! I just say: I'll see you in court."

The incumbent US President has so far not officially accepted the election result and most recently presented himself as a victim of systematic election fraud without providing any solid evidence.

With the help of his lawyers, Trump still wants to avert his defeat.

However, the chances of success are extremely low.

The election result was well received internationally.

Among other things, Angela Merkel congratulated Biden on his success.

For the German Chancellor, it is the fourth US President in her almost 16-year term in office.

"Our transatlantic friendship is irreplaceable," said Merkel and also explicitly congratulated Kamala Harris, the "elected first female vice president of the country".
