His cries for help probably saved the life of a stray mountain hiker in the Berchtesgaden Alps.
The 21-year-old was stuck in a ravine.
Rescue workers from the mountain rescue service rescued the man by rescue helicopter from the Great Funnel on Hohen Göll near Berchtesgaden, as the Bavarian Red Cross announced on Monday.
The mountain rescuers had to descend about 300 meters on Sunday and get the man out of the gorge with a 90-meter lifeline.
The victim got away with abrasions.
The man had already hiked through the mountains with a companion on Saturday.
After the escort turned back, the hiker wanted to take another route back, but then broke off because of the heavy snow.
When it got dark, he retired to a bivouac hole and spent the night there in freezing temperatures.
On Sunday morning he got lost looking for the way back and couldn't get up.
Because the battery of his cell phone was now empty, the young man called for help.
Other hikers heard him and called the emergency services.
According to the Red Cross, the mountain rescue service was on duty for around three and a half hours to save the man.
