"The second wave is still progressing", noted the Director General of Health, Jérôme Salomon, at a press conference.

Some 20,155 new cases of Covid-19 have been identified in the past 24 hours in France on Monday.

The day before, this figure rose to 38,619 people tested positive, against 40,000 to 60,000 the previous days.

The authorities also record 551 additional deaths due to Covid-19, against 270 on Sunday.

In total, 40,987 people have died from Covid-19 since the start of the epidemic in France, including 28,481 in hospitals.

Expected increase in the coming days

The number of patients in intensive care stood at 4,685 on Monday, against 4,539 on Sunday, for 6,400 beds currently available (but also for other pathologies).

In total, more than 31,000 patients (31,125) are currently hospitalized in France for a SARS-CoV-2 infection.

"There will be an increase in hospitalizations and resuscitations in the coming days since it is a reflection of the epidemic situation before confinement," Olivier Véran warned on Sunday morning.
