A man took his wife hostage in Tegernsee in Upper Bavaria and killed her.
According to a police spokesman on Tuesday evening, officials wanted to save the woman's life during an emergency access - the man attacked the officials with a knife and was so badly injured by "police use of firearms" that he died.
The woman died of the severe injuries the man had inflicted on her.
According to the spokesman, the police had gone into an argument in the house that evening.
Why the man took his wife hostage and why the situation then escalated remained completely unclear at first.
Initially the "Bild" newspaper reported online about the incident in the Miesbach district.
The criminal police took over the investigation that evening.
The State Criminal Police Office investigated the use of firearms by officials.
The latter investigations are common when police officers shoot with their service weapon in action.
Tegernsee is a small town with around 3660 inhabitants on the lake of the same name and is located a good 50 kilometers south of Munich.
On Wednesday, prosecutors and police wanted to release more information about the case.
