Bergamo overwhelmed by the Covid emergency, epicenter and first city to be affected by the virus.
The drama of Nembro and Alzano.
The intervention of the Russian military in support of the population hit the hardest in the first days of the pandemic.
The black and white shots by Tiziano Manzoni, a cross-section of the 120 days of the emergency, earned the Bergamo photographer, collaborator of ANSA and Corriere della Sera, a special mention of the International Photography Awards (Ipa), a competition dedicated to most prestigious photograph in the world.
The IPA website publishes a selection of the photographs taken in March.
A photo story that goes from deserted cities and towns to the dramatic intervention of soldiers to take away the bodies of the victims from the civil protection warehouses.
And then the images of the intensive care of the Papa Giovanni hospital in Bergamo, of the first hotels converted to accommodate Covid patients, of the Russian military engaged in the sanitation of a residence for the elderly in Alzano Lombardo.
Shots that, in the words of the author, want to be not a complaint but the testimony of the historical moment experienced by his land.
