(ANSA) - NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 16 - "We celebrated the 75th anniversary of the United Nations by committing ourselves to instill new energy in the organization, also through a reform of the Security Council that benefits all member states and makes it more current and more ready to respond effectively to global challenges. The Uniting for Consensus Group (UfC) intends to deliver on this commitment. "

This was stated by ambassador Mariangela Zappia, permanent representative to the UN, speaking on behalf of UfC at the annual debate of the General Assembly.

"Uniting for Consensus does not aim at new permanent seats and instead proposes a reform for all, without leaving anyone behind. Our proposal is the most articulated and the most pragmatic because it has been adapted over time to take into account the positions of the other negotiating groups", he specified.

Zappia then underlined how "the model we are proposing only provides for the increase of non-permanent members through long-term and two-year seats and with the possibility of being immediately re-elected. It is a scheme that allows the representation of each regional group to be strengthened, assigning to Africa the largest number of seats, recognizing the highest percentage increase in Asia-Pacific by doubling the seats in Latin America and Eastern Europe ".

"As many as 64 member states, or a third of the total, have not served in the Security Council - he concluded - A more just and inclusive system of rotation, such as the one outlined by the group, is indispensable".
