5G enables a large number of applications and new high-speed services but the market is still in its infancy and most companies that can benefit from this technology show little awareness on the subject: just 24% have a solid understanding of the technological characteristics. and the potential of the new networks.
This is highlighted by a research by the 5G & Beyond Observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano presented today during the online conference "5G: an ecosystem to be built".
Furthermore, according to the study, only 1 in four Italians of internet users has purchased or plans to buy a smartphone that supports the 5G network, 34% are considering the purchase, while 41% are not interested.
Information technology companies are more ready for 5G, but less than half (48%) already feel they are experts in the topic or have started initiatives, while 36% are still uncertain about the opportunities.
In addition, 122 use case trials have been conducted in Italy, mostly dedicated to remote monitoring (35%), with applications for example in agriculture and smart cities, and to improving the user experience (20%). ), with solutions mainly in the media and tourism sectors.
"The new 5G networks represent a clear discontinuity with previous generations - says Antonio Capone, Scientific Director of the 5G & Beyond Observatory - The innovations that will have the most significant impact on the relationships between the telco supply chain and the economic sectors that can benefit from 5G applications are Edge Computing, which allows the system to become a computing platform for user applications, and Network Slicing, which allows you to create multiple virtual networks on the same infrastructure with dedicated services and resources ".
"5G is a revolution with many possibilities of application in many sectors. But there is an ecosystem still to be built", adds Marta Valsecchi, Director of the 5G & Beyond Observatory.
