(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 19 - Half of the world population, 4.2 billion people, lives without sanitation.
40%, about three billion people, do not even have a sink at home to wash their hands with soap and water.
There are 297 thousand children under the age of 5 who die of diarrhea every year from drinking unsanitary water, who live in places where everything is lacking in hygiene.
But that's not all: globally, 80% of the wastewater generated by society returns to the ecosystem without being treated or reused.
UN estimates warn that by 2050, up to 5.7 billion people could live in areas where water is scarce at least one month a year. For this reason, especially in times of pandemic, World Toilet Day 2020, the world day celebrated by the United Nations has a particular meaning and wants to remember that there is very little time to reach the sustainable development goal that provides water and sanitation for all by 2030.
This year's theme of the World Day is sanitation and climate change. (HANDLE).
