Electric toothbrushes promise the best oral hygiene - but not all products can convince in the test.

  • Some swear by their electric toothbrush, others prefer to use the tried and tested manual toothbrush.

  • The right brushing technique is crucial: those who scrub too hard damage the gums and tooth enamel, those who do not sweep from the gums towards the teeth clean bacteria under the gum line.

  • The advertising promise of many electric toothbrushes: Using ultrasound technology, pressure control, which signals too much pressure when brushing, and various cleaning programs, teeth should be gently but hygienically clean.

Stiftung Warentest took a close look at 59 products

    .

Brush your teeth twice a day and from red to white *: Many people received this advice from the dentist in childhood.

It is currently still valid, but a lot has happened with regard to the right “tool”.

Conventional manual toothbrushes are found in fewer and fewer bathrooms: Many prefer to use the electric version every day.

These are now available in a wide variety of designs -

stylish in black or rose, with various preset cleaning programs, a reminder function for changing the brush head and much more.

But not all products are as good as their advertising promise.

The Stiftung Warentest, a major German consumer organization, tested 59 electric toothbrushes for their cleaning power and handling.

It was also tested whether they withstand the loads in the endurance test and thus have a long service life.

None of the 59 toothbrushes were able to convince with “very good”,

but 16 pieces were awarded the grade “good”.
