The vaccine race: After Moderna and Pfizer announced the successful interim results of their vaccines against Corona, the British pharmaceutical company Astraznica also joins the list.

The company announced earlier today (Monday) that the corona vaccine, developed in collaboration with Oxford University, is up to 90 percent effective in preventing corona virus infection.

According to the published results, based on 131 vaccines that received the vaccine, the maximum effectiveness of the vaccine comes if half a dose is given, and then a full dose at least a month apart.

If two full doses are given at least a month apart, the effectiveness of the vaccine is only 62 percent.

The average efficiency of the experiment reached 70 percent.

There were no severe cases of covid-19 in the trial and none of the participants were hospitalized.

Astraznica's comparative advantage over competitors

The results published are good news for Israel for two reasons.

First, three days ago, Israel agreed with the company to purchase ten million doses of its vaccines, and if the vaccine is indeed effective, this is excellent news.

Second, a reduced dose (half dose) means that the vaccines purchased by Israel will be enough for more people.

In addition, although the efficacy of the Astrazenica vaccine is lower than that of Pfizer and Moderna, each of which prevented about 95 per cent of cases, the British vaccine has a relative advantage in terms of distribution.

While the other two vaccines must be stored frozen, the new vaccine can be stored at refrigerator temperature, making it easier to transport and store around the world.

The British vaccine is also cheaper, which will make its purchase in large doses more possible.

How exactly does the Astraznica vaccine work?

Unlike Modernra and Pfizer who develop vaccines based on a relatively new technology called mRNA that contains the 'genetic instructions' for protein production, the British vaccine works differently.

"The vaccine developed by Astraznica in collaboration with Oxford University works on a slightly different principle from that of Modern and Pfizer, but is still similar," explains Dr. Erez Gerty, an immunologist at the Davidson Institute for Science Education. The operating instructions for the production of one of the proteins of the corona virus.

This virus infects our cells, injects them into these operating instructions, and causes them to produce the same protein.

"Immune cells recognize the foreign protein, learn to recognize it and so if they meet the real Corona virus in the future, they will know how to stop it before it causes the disease."

Cheaper, more accessible.

Dr. Gerty also notes the relative advantages of the British vaccine. The certainty about it is smaller, "he notes. However," unfortunately, according to preliminary results, it seems that the effectiveness of the vaccine may be lower, although still far above the threshold set by the FDA. "

what is the next step?

Astrazenica is expected to submit the vaccine to the British Ministry of Health for approval in the coming days, hoping to receive an emergency permit within about two weeks.

However it is important to note that similar to the publications of Moderna and Pfizer, these are only preliminary results, and it is necessary to gather more information about the vaccine, its long-term efficacy and also the best way to use it.

As mentioned, Astraznica examined two options for administering the vaccine, and found that one of them worked better (giving half a dose and a full dose a month later), and now more data needs to be accumulated.
