After an exchange of fire in Meckenheim near Bonn, there are new details about the man who was killed by a bullet.
The 44-year-old is said to have been under the influence of alcohol.
There are corresponding indications, said a police spokesman in Bonn.
The previous evening, residents had alerted the police because the man was said to have rioted on the street and shot around.
When a police car arrived, the shooter injured a policeman on the hand, according to investigators.
The 44-year-old therefore fled to a plot of land about 200 meters away, where officials stopped him and tried to persuade him to give up - the man refused, according to the police.
When the special forces attacked it early Monday morning, there was an exchange of fire and the man died of his injuries while still on site.
Large scale operation in the small town
In view of the incident, the police spoke of a "very dynamic situation" in the 25,000-inhabitant city south of Bonn.
There was a large number of police in action.
According to the officials, doctors and paramedics were also on site, as were pastors.
So far nothing is known about a possible motive for the crime.
The public prosecutor's office and the criminal police in Bonn lead the investigation.
An autopsy should now clarify, among other things, whether the man died of police bullets or whether he killed himself.
