PCR test and rapid test are two methods with which a coronavirus infection can be detected.

Where the smear is taken depends on the following factors.

  • Some describe it as extremely uncomfortable, while others find it short and painless: the Corona test, also known as the PCR test *.

  • The reason for this: There are different ways in which the test can be taken.

  • The physicians and helpers who carry out the procedure decide whether a swab deeply from the throat is necessary or a short insertion of the stick into the nose is sufficient.

The type of test mainly depends on what information the doctor wants to access

    .

In principle, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), as the central institution of the federal government in the field of disease monitoring and prevention, recommends a corona test that includes a sample from the throat and nose.

However, more and more often, potential corona patients are reporting smears exclusively from the nose or throat

.

What is behind this was explained by Professor Doctor Johannes Knoblauch, Head of the Hospital Hygiene Department at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in an interview with the Hamburger Morgenpost (MoPo).

Depending on the aim of the test, the corona test itself also varies. According to Garlauch, a combined smear should always be taken from the nose and mouth if it is to be examined whether a Covid-19 patient has survived the infection .

This would give you the greatest possible certainty that the person being tested is no longer infectious.

The corona test for people who show symptoms usually works differently

Corona test: "If you want to look for potential sick people, a throat swab is sufficient"

"

If a person already shows signs of illness, it doesn't really matter where the smear is taken,

" says Knoblauch.

In the case, the virus had already spread over a large area in the throat and nose.

And since these body regions are connected, the virus could be detected in both places, reports the MoPo.

In test centers, only a throat swab is often taken: "If you want to look for potential sick people, a throat swab is sufficient," says Knoblauch.

However, it should be taken into account that a test will only be positive on the third day after infection with coronaviruses.

It would take an average of five to six days for the first symptoms to show up, which is why two corona tests are usually carried out at intervals if an infection is suspected.
