The corona crisis apparently had an advantage for Barack Obama and his wife Michelle: They were able to spend more time with their daughters. Observing their relationship delighted the former US president.

Barack Obama's daughters, Malia, 22, and Sasha, 19, are now very close, according to their father.

"They have been with us almost the whole time since March, with a few interruptions," said the former US president in an interview with People magazine.

For him and his wife Michelle it was a pleasure to spend so much "extra time" with the children, said the 59-year-old.

"It's especially nice to see what great friends Malia and Sasha have become."

"Now both are old enough and enjoy each other's company"

A few years ago there was often competition between the sisters.

"Now both are old enough and enjoy each other's company," Obama said.

Nevertheless, the time at home also had ups and downs for the family.

"I'm sure it felt claustrophobic to them at times."

Michelle and Barack Obama have been married since 1992.

Their older daughter Malia attends Harvard University, and Sasha began studying at the University of Michigan in 2019.
