ROME - Large-scale distribution (GDO) is driving the sale of organic products, + 16.4% in the last year, with a turnover that is now double that of specialized shops which continues to grow + 3.2% in 2019. In 2020, a positive trend also for e-commerce with the online purchase of organic products for 12.5% ​​of total sales.

Over 22 million Italian families have purchased an organic product at least once in the last year, for a total turnover of 3.3 billion euros.



This is what emerges from an analysis by WWF Italia on the sector and on the consideration that "Italy of organic farming must aim at 40% of utilized agricultural area (UAA) by 2030 for a true ecological transition". In particular, it is explained "that in this way" Italy would thus have the opportunity to win the challenge of the competitiveness of its agri-food products at an international level by focusing on quality, protecting the environment and people's health. " moreover that "currently the consumption of organic products represents only 4% of all food consumption, but the growth in recent years is continuously increasing, + 4.4% in 2019, + 180% from 2010 to today". - it is noted - it continued also in 2020 during the lockdown period (March-May 2020) with an increase of 11%. Finally, it is recalled that in the last ten years organic farming in Italy has almost doubled, even without the push of the Green Deal, going from 8.7% of Sau Bio and 47,663 operators in 2010 to the current 15.8% of Sau and 80,643 operators registered at the end of December 2019 ".
