The torzella riccia and the Pietrelcina artichoke are the two new products that become part of the Slow Food Presidia family in the Campania Region.

This was announced by the international non-profit association committed to giving value to food.

The torzella riccia is one of the oldest cabbages in the world, "its journey - explains a note - begins more than 4000 years ago in the eastern area of the Mediterranean basin and for this reason it is also called Greek cabbage".

It is a herbaceous plant that reaches an average height of one meter and a diameter of about 70 centimeters and arrived in the Acerrano Nolano area, in the province of Naples, through trade.

Today the territory is the main production area.

The stem of the plant is robust and "emits numerous shoots with fleshy curly dark green leaves, while the flowers are of an intense yellow".

It is harvested starting from November.

Its seed is present in the Regional Bank of Campania Germoplasm and is registered in the Campania repertoire of varieties at risk of extinction.

In Pietrelcina, a town in the Benevento area known throughout the world for being the birthplace of Padre Pio, a particular variety of artichoke introduced around 1840 by a prefect originally from Bari found its ideal habitat.

What makes the variety unique is the particularly delicate flavor.

It was included in the Regional Bank of the Germplasm of Campania among the traditional varieties in danger of extinction.

The area cultivated with artichokes in the province of Benevento has always been around 30 hectares, half of which in the municipality of Pietrelcina alone.
