Barack Obama remembers when his marriage almost ended

2020-11-25T12:41:17.359Z

Assuming the presidency generated some problems for Barack Obama, and one of the most serious was in his marriage to Michelle Obama.

When

Barack Obama

took office in the United States, he became, along with his wife

Michelle

, one of the most beloved and most popular presidential couples in the history of that country.

However, having assumed the presidency also generated some problems for the former president, and one of the most serious was precisely in his relationship with the mother of his daughters.

And there was a time when they almost separated during his presidential race, as Barack Obama reveals in his memoirs, 'A Promised Land'.

In them, he recalls how his marriage got worse when he told Michelle he wanted to run for president.

In the book, Barack wrote about how he sat excitedly with his wife to tell her about his presidential plans, but instead of joy, he recalled that Michelle locked herself in a room and refused to speak to him.

"She stared at me and got up from the couch. 'God, Barack ... When will that be enough?" She wrote.

"Before I could answer, he went to the bedroom and closed the door," he adds.

In addition, he noted that their relationship also did not improve when he was elected as the 44th president of the United States.

Barack described a "background of tension in Michelle, subtle but constant" and a "loneliness" with his wife that worried him if they fell out of love.

"There were nights when, lying next to Michelle in the dark, I thought of those days when everything between us felt lighter, when her smile was more constant and our love was less burdened," he wrote.

"And my heart suddenly clenched at the thought that those days might not return."

In an interview with 'People', Barack explained that Michelle was "less optimistic" about her political career than he was, which is what led to their marital problems.

"That was the truth of our time in the White House ... Michelle believed a lot in the work she did, but was less optimistic about what she could do. She is more skeptical about politics and more aware of sacrifices to the family." he stated in the interview.

"During the time we were there, Michelle felt this underlying tension. The pressure, the stress, of having to do everything right, of being 'active' at all times," he added.

The former president also revealed that his partner often did not voice his concerns about their relationship, due to her husband's busy career.

"There were times when I think she was frustrated, sad or angry, but I knew I had to worry about Afghanistan or the financial crisis," he said.

In the end, Barack reveals that what saved their marriage was when they left the White House in 2017, and handed over the job to

Donald Trump

and

Melania Trump

.

"It was like a big exhalation right after we left the office ... It took me a while to talk about how he felt," Obama said.

Obama also told 'People', "I think we got out of it all. There were great joys in the White House. There was never a time when we didn't recognize what an extraordinary privilege it was to be there. Most importantly, our children came out intact. and they are wonderful, kind, thoughtful, creative, and rightsless young women. So that's a big sigh of relief. "

Regarding his and Michelle's relationship today, he commented that his wife "has been more relaxed and more cheerful since we left office. It allowed us to enjoy the deep love that comes with such a long marriage. But also to return to be friends".
