Several accidents, several injuries and an SUV in flames: This is the preliminary balance of a chaos drive in Baden-Württemberg, the causes of which are still in the dark.
A 48-year-old man is suspected.
He is said to have caused accidents in the Karlsruhe area on Tuesday evening and then fled south via Autobahn 5.
In the Freiburg region, he was finally arrested after further accidents, the public prosecutor and police in Karlsruhe announced on Wednesday night.
The background was still unclear even hours later.
Woman cyclist in hospital
According to previous knowledge, there was a first rear-end collision with a slightly injured person on Tuesday around 6:40 p.m. in Rheinstetten in the Karlsruhe district, it said.
The suspect fled with his SUV in the direction of Karlsruhe.
There further accidents and traffic hazards were reported to the police, which are assigned to the man.
A 44-year-old cyclist had to be taken to hospital injured.
Eventually the man's SUV overturned and caught fire.
Woman driver threatened with knife
The suspect then threatened an uninvolved motorist with a knife, brought her car into his power and thus caused another accident.
According to the police, his further escape led him to the south via the A5.
The fugitive then seized a truck near Herbolzheim.
When approaching the A5 with the truck, it was reported that there was a collision with a car.
"This was apparently dragged along by the truck over a long distance," it said.
The two inmates were injured.
At 8:50 p.m., the police finally arrested the suspect near Riegel in the Emmendingen district.
Why the suspect caused the accidents, injuring people and robbing vehicles was, according to a police spokesman, "still completely open" on Wednesday night.
The police are currently investigating the details of the individual acts.
The investigators are looking for witnesses and other injured parties, as there could have been more incidents on the A5 than previously announced.
You are asked to report to the criminal police in Karlsruhe.
In Karlsruhe alone, around 80 police officers were on duty that evening.
