Ignored by Grammy Awards, The Weeknd thinks they are corrupt

2020-11-27T15:00:45.254Z

The Canadian artist was not among the nominees despite the worldwide critical and popular success of After Hours, his latest album. He accuses the American institution of having made trade negotiations take precedence over artistic choices.

The Weeknd was expected among the favorites of the Grammy awards.

It missed.

He does not appear in any selection, he who has been enthroned at the top of the

charts

for four consecutive weeks this year, after the release of

After Hours,

his new album.

In addition to its popular success, the album, which sold 445,000 copies in its first week, was met with praising criticism.

How then to explain this absence in the nominations of the American musical Oscars?

The artist thinks he has the answer.

He just gave it bluntly on Twitter: “

The Grammys remain corrupt.

You owe me, as well as to my fans and to the industry, total transparency

, ”he said yesterday.

What he claims is unverifiable of course, but his release has at least the merit of calling into question a system deemed opaque and denounced many times in the past.

Starboy,

The Weeknd's previous album, won him the Grammy for best album of the year in 2018. Asked by

Variety

about The Weeknd's absence from the nominees list this year, the president of the Recording Academy, in charge of the ceremony, Harvey Mason Jr. opportunely returned the ball to the voters - "It

is [them] who decide

" -, sure of not being able to be attacked, since one does not know their identity .

The reason for its absence is actually commercial, according to

Variety.

The Weeknd reportedly refused to choose between singing at the Grammys and at halftime of the Super Bowl, as the Recording Academy would have asked him, anxious to ensure exclusivity as the two ceremonies are held a week apart .

The turn taken during the negotiations would have been right for his nomination to the Grammys.

Nicki Minaj took advantage of the day the nominees were announced to remind her that the Grammys preferred "

the white man Bon Iver

" to her in 2012, for the award for new artist, "

while [she had] seven songs at the same time. Billboard time and a bigger first week of sales than any rapper in the past decade

”.

The main names

Beyoncé has nine Grammy nominations for 2021 alone. In total, she has been nominated 79 times, for 24 awards.

At just 39, she is by far the most distinguished woman at this ceremony.

She could notably win the categories of song of the year and album of the year, for

Black Parade

, released in June, in full swing Black Lives Matter, after the death of Georges Floyd, following a police stop.

Others nominated in the Album of the Year category are Coldplay for

Everyday Life

, Taylor Swift (

folklore

), Dua Lipa (

Future Nostalgia)

and Post Malone

Hollywood's Bleeding.

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion is also in the limelight with four nominations, including one for the Breakthrough of the Year award.
