The American daily has drawn up its list of the 25 best current actors and actresses. Two Frenchwomen appear in this list. Isabelle H

She arrives on the second step of the podium, just behind Denzel Washington.

According to the New York Times, Isabelle Huppert is the best actress of the 21st century.

The daily cinema critics have made their “top 25” of the best actors and actresses in the world: after the Oscar winner for “Training Day” and our national Isabelle, nominated in 2017 for the Oscar for best actress thanks to her role in “Elle” by Paul Verhoeven they awarded third place to Daniel Day-Lewis.

The ranking then shows, in order, the Canadian Keanu Reeves, the Australian-American Nicole Kidman, the South Korean Song Kang-ho (the hero of "Parasite"), the Italian Toni Servillo (who played Berlusconi in "Silvio and the Others"), the Chinese Zhao Tao (who plays notably in "the Eternals", by Jia Zhangke), the American Viola Davis ("Fences") and Saoirse Ronan (seen recently in "Lady Bird" and " the Daughters of Doctor March).

No French actor in this ranking, but another French actress: Catherine Deneuve appears in 21st place, between Rob Morgan, notably featured in Marvel's Netflix series, and Melissa McCarthy, actress who made herself known in the "Gilmore Girls" series.

Denzel Washington divides

This obviously very subjective list has been criticized on social networks.

Some regret the absence of Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Al Pacino or Robert de Niro.

Others bluntly mock the presence of Denzel Washington at the top of the podium, arguing that the American comedian was especially illustrated in the 1990s, with "Malcolm X", "The Pelican Affair" or "Philadelphia".

“Denzel Washington is above any category: he is a giant of the screen doubled as a subtle and sensitive craftsman, he is

old school

but with a burning presence of superstar, however justifies the New York Times.

He can play Shakespeare or August Wilson, a villain or a hero.

He is also one of the best actors to play regular guys.
