Argentina's football idol Diego Maradona was buried in close circles one day after his death.

The 1986 world champion was buried next to his parents on Thursday in the Jardín de Bella Vista private cemetery in a suburb of Buenos Aires.

Only his relatives and close friends attended the funeral.

The coffin had previously been brought to the cemetery in a funeral procession from the government palace in the historic center of Buenos Aires.

Numerous fans lined the route and paid their last respects to their idol.

Throughout the day, thousands of people had said goodbye to Maradona at Casa Rosada.

After waiting in line for hours, they walked past the coffin, which was covered with jerseys and a national flag.

Many made the sign of the cross and threw flowers over the barrier.

There were tons of shouts like "Thank you, Diego" or "I love you, Diego".

Riots around the government palace

Towards the end of the wake, some fans forced their way into the government palace because they feared they would not be admitted to Maradona's coffin.

The police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

There were also riots in the surrounding streets.

The wake was then canceled.

Maradona died on Wednesday at the age of 60.

He is considered one of the best footballers in history.

From 1976 to 1997 Maradona played in Argentina, Spain and Italy for the clubs Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Naples, Seville and Newell's Old Boys.

With the Argentine national team, he won the world title in 1986 with a 3-2 final victory over Germany.
