- Over three billion people live in agricultural areas affected by high or extremely high levels of water scarcity and scarcity of water resources;
of these, almost half have to deal with severe constraints.
In addition, in the last twenty years, worldwide freshwater reserves have decreased by more than 20 percent, underlining the importance of producing more with less waste of resources, especially in the agricultural sector, which among the sectors productive is the main water consumer.
This is what we read in the FAO report entitled The State of Food and Agriculture (Sofa) 2020, published today by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
The Sofa specifies that the achievement of the commitments made internationally with reference to the SDGs, including the "Zero Hunger" goal (SDG 2) "is still possible", but only if productive and sustainable use of fresh water is guaranteed and rainwater in agriculture, a sector that contributes to more than 70 percent of water withdrawals globally.
