Lebanon: Beirut synagogue undergoing restoration after 4 August explosion

(ANSA) - ROME, NOVEMBER 27 - The main synagogue in Beirut, heavily damaged during the civil war, then restored in recent years and again afflicted by the damage caused by the explosion of the port on 4 August, is being restored.

This was reported by the Lebanese English newspaper TheDaily Star, which cites sources from the Council of the Lebanese Jewish community.


    In recent days, photos of the renovated interiors of the Maghen Abraham temple, dating back to the 1920s and located in the Wadi Abu-Jamil district of Beirut, for decades a Jewish district of a Beirut now disappeared due to the destruction that took place during the civil war (1975) had circulated on the Internet. -90) and the subsequent reconstruction with modern buildings.


    The Council of the Lebanese Jewish Community, to which a total of no more than 200 people belong, is responsible for three other synagogues scattered throughout Lebanon.

    Until the 1970s, the Lebanese Jewish community numbered up to 27,000 people and 32 different synagogues stood in the country.

During and after the war, most of the Lebanese Jews emigrated to Europe, North America and Israel.


    The Beirut temple had been heavily damaged in the early 1980s by an Israeli bombing in the WadiAbu Jamil area, then a refuge for Shiite militiamen from whom the pro-Iranian Hezbollah were born.
