Sensible corona measures: With the Swiss cheese model against Covid-19

Governments, virologists and business are trying to find the best way out of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Swiss cheese model could be the answer.

  • Lockdown, travel restrictions and a mask requirement have only one goal: to reduce coronavirus infections as much as possible, in this way prevent corona deaths and relieve hospitals.

  • Doctors and politicians do not yet know exactly which measures will have the best effect.

But the so-called Swiss cheese model seems to be the best way to slow the pandemic.

  • Four factors play together in the cheese model.

Corona rapid tests, quarantine measures and tracing of contact persons: Depending on the economic and political situation, the countries have various options for combating corona.

The lockdown is considered the last resort and is imposed when the Covid-19 cases increase exponentially and hospitals reach their limits due to the large number of patients in need of treatment.

If it comes to a shutdown, the question arises whether this could have been prevented.

This is where the Swiss cheese strategy comes into play.

According to its author Tomas Pueyo, this consists of four components that

can

stop the virus from spreading

:

  • Protective barriers (e.g. controls at the borders using rapid tests *)

  • Focus on social groups (avoiding crowds, reducing the size of events, stricter rules in old people's homes, prisons and other places with high circulation opportunities)

  • Contagion prevention (reduce personal contacts, wear a mask)

  • Testing-tracking-isolating (faster identification of contact persons by using the corona warning app and faster corona test results would be helpful here)

Protect yourself and others with FFP2 masks

They are considered to be the most effective mouth and nose protection on the market: FFP2 masks.

The four-layer and CE-certified FFP2 masks from the STM brand (promotional link) score points with their accuracy of fit thanks to a soft and adjustable nose clip and are comfortable to wear - even for those who wear glasses.

Corona measures must interlock - and thus reduce the infection rate

According to the MDR, virologist Melanie Brinkmann, working group leader at the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research, describes the model as follows: “Every slice of cheese has holes.

These are imperfections (imperfections).

And now imagine the

measures, the AHA-L rules, contact tracing, the new antigen tests as cheese slices

that have their imperfections.

But if we switch them all in a row, we can protect ourselves better and better against the virus. "

The Swiss cheese strategy is also mentioned in the current NDR podcast “Coronavirus Update”: Virologist Sandra Ciesek explains: “The four components are all important, they can all help to get the infection process under control.

And they interlock, you shouldn't look at them individually, you have to see them as a whole.

And if you fulfill one of the modules, then you have a certain protection, but if you do all four, then the protection level simply increases.

That's why it's important to do as many of these things as possible in order to reduce the numbers.

“In order to prevent the lockdown strategy, the four building blocks mentioned above would have to be particularly strong and effective.

Every measure has its gaps, but if you put them one behind the other like cheese slices with holes in them, one measure would offset the weakness of the next.
