He says he never experienced racism. Why should Roberto Blanco tell me otherwise? Only, because I am black?

There is only one moment in this conversation with Roberto Blanco when he implies that there is a wound.

After just under an hour, the time has come.

We're sitting in a restaurant on the Swiss side of Lake Constance, Blanco, his wife, his manager, a colleague from SPIEGEL and me.

Blanco talks about a fork in his career.

A moment in which the pop singer almost became a show master.

But someone, something stood in his way.

Maybe it was the color of his skin.

Roberto Blanco suggests this, but does not express it.

Nevertheless, this moment says a lot about how the pop star deals with racism.

The idea was to talk to Roberto Blanco about racism.

After all, this is happening in many places right now, at least since the African American George Floyd was killed in a police operation in the US state of Minnesota.

What does Blanco say about this, "Germany's most famous black man," as SPIEGEL called him in 1997?

Blanco, 83, shaped the image of black people in this country for decades.

Hardly any Afro-German has achieved his fame to this day.
