Stiftung Warentest took a closer look at smartphone repair services.
The test also examined which models you can easily repair yourself.
In the
test
,
Stiftung Warentest
*
examines
how well various smartphones and
tablets
can be repaired.
Only one
smartphone manufacturer
does well.
Often,
hobbyists
without
original spare parts
and
instructions
on their own.
Kassel -
Stiftung Warentest
often puts
the latest
smartphone
or tablet to the test.
But what if the devices break down?
In the
test
, the
consumer organization
checked which products can be repaired and also what is required and
offered
by the
manufacturer
.
Smartphone and tablet in the test: Stiftung Warentest examines the "reparability" of 14 devices
In the
test
, nine smartphones and four
tablets were put
under the microscope - including an
iPhone
and
Microsoft Surface Pro
.
However, the test result is not only sobering for hobbyists, it also represents a real
environmental
problem.
The experts from
Stiftung Warentest
tested, among other things, how easily the
display
and battery of
smartphones
and tablets can be replaced and whether the provider or manufacturer
offers
original spare parts
and understandable repair instructions.
Attention was also paid to the general possibility of repairs, including the
prices
for any overhauls and repairs of the products.
How easy is it to repair smartphones and tablets yourself?
We checked this for 13 products such as iPhone, Microsoft Surface Pro & Co.
Only the Fairphone 3 can be repaired by laypeople.
That's annoying - and an environmental problem.

iPhone and Co .: Popular smartphone in the test - Apple repair service only satisfactory
Even if you do decide
to fix
a damaged
smartphone
or
tablet
on your own, it's easier said than done.
After all, it is often unclear at the beginning which
tools
and what effort are required to open the devices.
If you then want to replace the
battery
or display, you will quickly find yourself faced with a number of new problems.
As
Stiftung Warentest
reports,
only one
of the models examined, including the
iPad 10.2
from Apple and the
Galaxy Z
Flip
from Samsung, is easy to repair even for a layperson.
The repair service of
Samsung
cut the
test
from a "good" (2.4) supported by
Apple
, however, with the quality rating of "Satisfactory (3.1).
Test pays attention to sustainability: These smartphone repair services do best
The question of how well a
smartphone
or tablet can actually be repaired is also a question of
sustainability
.
Because the electronic companions contain many
valuable raw materials
that first have to be extracted with great effort.
The production of integrated
chips
,
for example, also
consumes energy and consequently causes high
C02 emissions
.
It is also up to the consumer to use the device for as long as possible.
But the more complex and expensive a necessary
repair
is, the greater the temptation to replace the defective device with a brand new model.
In the
test
, the following three cut
repair services
came out on top:
Name of the repair service | Quality assessment by Stiftung Warentest |
My Phone Repair | Good (1.8) |
McRepair | Good (2.7) |
Letsfix | Satisfactory (2.9) |
Repair your smartphone yourself?
Stiftung Warentest criticizes adhesive connections discovered in the test
According to
Stiftung Warentest
, adhesives are the biggest hurdle for attempting repairs yourself.
According to this, most of the housings and components in the
test are
“not only
secured
with
tiny screws
or clamp connections”, but also “firmly glued together”.
In order to be able to loosen these adhesions, they first have to be heated, according to the
consumer
portal.
Only one device managed without the
adhesive connections
.
With another model, however, the testers even had to use a
chemical solvent in
order to be able to properly remove a stuck battery from a
smartphone
.
Test shows: Hobby hobbyists have a hard time - prefer to have their smartphone repaired by a professional
But that's not all: The experts at
Stiftung Warentest
criticize the fact that many providers
do not provide
private users with
repair instructions
or original spare parts.
If you want to lend a hand yourself, you have to rely on information and spare parts from third-party providers.
The latter in particular is problematic because it is
difficult to assess
the
quality of
the parts in advance.
For
hobbyists
, it is therefore advisable
to pay
a little attention to the
criteria examined
in the
test
when buying a smartphone or
tablet
.
But if you don't
trust yourself to tinker with your own
smartphone
, you should let a professional come in.
At least this is
more environmentally friendly
than buying a new model right away, the consumer portal concluded.
