Between autumn and the harsh winter: the best time to hike in the Jezreel Valley

We hope we do not reach a third closure, but even before that happens - it is time to take advantage of the beautiful days, when everything is already green in the Jezreel Valley.

We went out to check out some innovations in the area - from brunch baskets for picnics in the fields, through a village for rabbits that has just opened to quality olive oil for the harvest days

The Jezreel Valley is already painted green these days.

The good rains made it a great corner for a day or two of hiking, especially during the Corona period, which also caused the area's tourists to try and reinvent themselves, and offer Israelis a good enough entertainment experience for a time when it is impossible to get together.

We set out for the green valley, in the days of the olive harvest, green rejuvenation and wide fields painted in the colors of reddish vines, to get to know some of the innovations the area offers, especially in preparation for the Hanukkah holiday.

In the religious moshav Ein Yaakov, Sdot Winery is located in one of the most beautiful locations.

Opposite you look at Mount Carmel that stands in front of you full of power, to the left Ramot Menashe and to the north of the Lower Galilee Mountains.

Now in this landscape, open a bottle of wine, or a picnic basket, and you are set.

This is how Roi Levy and his father Ze'ev, members of the moshav, who opened the winery on their farm, also felt.

As wine lovers, they decided to study the field and specialize and in 2009 planted a vineyard aimed at a boutique winery.

The vineyard has 11 varieties of rapeseed, including Petit Syrah, Shiraz, Tempraneau and Canary Muscat.

In 2012 they built their wonderful winery - a kind of wooden deck that protrudes from the air into the landscape - and in 2016 their visitor center opened.

The family produces about 20,000 bottles a year, but it is not just wine we are talking about.

“The Corona era has forced us to expand our product,” says Roy, who also routinely serves small, cold dishes that blend with the wine, such as cheeses and salads, while now providing cute brunch baskets, including wine of course, for anyone wanting to shop and sit in the green fields of Jezreel Valley, or in the nearby winter pool that the rains have already filled.

In the picnic baskets you will find 2 glasses of glass of wine (as a gift including the opener), a choice of 4 types of wine, goat and sheep cheeses (of Barkanit), Greek salad, bread, dips and plates and a consumable amount.

Tasting tour: NIS 35, double picnic basket: NIS 250.

Open: Sun-Fri, 052-8446228.

Just come and collect.

Peter the Rabbit is waiting in Bethlehem in Galilee

Not far away is the new attraction for the family that will do you good, but especially for the animals.

Shirley and Oren Nagar moved to Moshav Bethlehem HaGlilit, who sold their home in Kiryat Ata to fulfill a dream and open a place that would take care of the animals that were thrown away, saved from extermination and other troubles of the human race.

This is how the "Rabbit Village" was opened after the first closure, the purpose of which is to treat various types of rabbits that have survived the experimental industry.

"We opened the place for ourselves," Shirley explains, "but thanks to a demand from the public we decided to open it to the public."

On a large area of 60 acres they raise a number of animals that have been abandoned, or brought to them for various reasons, including alpine goats, Sudanese turtles, fattening ducks and also battery chickens, which the males usually go to shred.

But the attention is taken by the cute anabones.

"We have eight breeds of rabbits," says Shirley, who also adds some of them for adoption.

In the guided tour that takes place by coordination and registration, adults and children learn about the rabbits, their food and even the different breeds.

For example, the race of Peter Hanerb (Mini Rex).

You can feed the rabbits and pet them, but not pick them up - "they don't like it," Shirley explains.

Also in place, the sun-colored parrot cunning will fly above you and a complex of sessions, performances and creation.

The proceeds are used to maintain and operate the place.

Tour: NIS 50 per person, about half an hour.

To register: 050-8198688 or on the

website.

Instead you will find activities with animals that have survived death or been abandoned.

Delicious inspiration

Still in the area, a jump to another Templar colony, namely Aloni Abba.

Shirley Barlev and Yifat Golan, two companies, neighbors and artists rented in 2016 this amazing temporary structure that had been closed for years, and turned it into an art studio.

They called it a place of inspiration.

"We saw the power in this old house and with the help of a business consultant we 'sewed' a concept of a shop and an art studio + something small nearby like coffee and cake," says Yifat.

After two years of hard work, the place has become a small cafe that is open from morning to noon, and on the way you can enjoy the exhibitions displayed in the structure by the artists of the area, and of course attend painting workshops of the two.

On the menu: mainly good products, such as sandwiches, homemade cakes and smoothies from the region's raw products.

You can shop and go sit outside in the yard, or in one of the shady corners around the beautiful house.

Another place, a small shop of second-hand clothes, art items, jewelry and gifts for sale.

"The name 'place of inspiration' was simply born," explains Yifat, "a place of inspiration that has become a source of inspiration."

And maybe this is also what the producers of the film "Exodus" found on the spot, who filmed an excerpt from the film at home.

Open: Monday-Friday, until 14:00.

The holiday of oil

With food comes appetite, so you certainly will not be angry if we turn slightly and drive a little east to Moshav Hoshaya, which is in the Lower Galilee, but kisses a big kiss to the good valley.

These are the days of the olive harvest, days that always occur with the coming of Hanukkah, which is the Feast of the Miracle of the Oil.

Shai Lavie produces olive oil, and even excellent oil.

He came to Hoshaya in 1989 from Moshav Beit Yatir, when he was one of the founders of Yatir Winery.

But here, in the fields of the valley and the Galilee, he decided to move from vineyards of grapes to vineyards of olives.

"The connection to the land is planted in me," he explains.

Adjacent to the route of the Israel Trail, in 1995 he planted 30 dunams on which about 600 Syrian olive trees (which come from Lebanon - from the Tzur area) are spread.

"I believe this is the right variety for the Galilee and the Land of Israel, and it is one of the oldest there is," he says.

Shai sells his oil in a moshav, not far from the vineyard, and in the future plans to open a small visitor center, and possibly a beautiful observation deck over the vineyard.

In the meantime, its oil can be purchased on the website or in select stores.
