The terrible leak in the ZOOM conversation: the employee who revealed a little too much (Facebook / Piers Mummery.)

The global corona epidemic has caused radical changes in our work and life patterns over the past year.

Crowds of people are forced to work from home using virtual platforms, like Zoom.

People not only work through the zoom but also meet up with friends, family, learn and do a variety of other activities this way.

Thus, for very many hours, we watch ourselves in a slot on the screen, and it is likely that this innovative way of communication will continue to exist for a long time even when the plague situation improves.

There are quite a few advantages to zoom, and it has certainly upgraded our quality of life during quarantine periods, but it also has quite a few disadvantages.

One would think that the use of mouth and nose masks and working from home would make people less worried about their appearance (and also the fact that an epidemic is raging outside, of course).

But in practice, due to the presence of zoom in our lives, people regularly look at themselves on a video screen and become more aware of their appearance than before, and then - they are not satisfied.

Worse than the impact of selfie culture and filters

Before the zoom caught on as the dominant media in shaping our self-image, people used selfies and various apps to create images with a filter of themselves.

The term "snapshot dysphoria", created as a result of a stream of patients who arrived and with them hope to look similar to their edited version, has caused widespread concern due to its potential to cause Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

In a 2019 study, over two-thirds of plastic surgeons reported that they had received inquiries about medical cosmetic procedures aimed at improving the selfie image.

We are not used to meeting our realistic version so much.

Unlike momentary and pulsed selfies that are common on social media, during a zoom call we are presented with our realistic version and while in motion, a self-awareness that very few were accustomed to in the daily routine before the plague.

This phenomenon can have far-reaching consequences for dissatisfaction with appearance and the desire to undergo medical cosmetic procedures.

Not everything you see on a real screen

In the real world we do not see ourselves talking and expressing emotions, and we certainly do not compare our appearance in an image that is placed side by side to other facial images as is the case in video calls.

Camcorders can also be of poor quality and distort the real look.

Past studies have shown that a face shot at a distance of about 30 cm makes the nose look 30 percent larger than the same photo taken from a distance of a meter and a half. It was also shown that webcams, due to their technical structure, produce a face image , Wider and even wider eye space.People are not sufficiently aware of the distortions created by the same cameras do not know that what is reflected in front of the screen does not represent their appearance in the real world.

Dangerous circle

In a theory known as Facial Feedback Hyposthesis it has been argued that treating wrinkles that express nerve can improve depressive states, by by showing people less sadness towards those around them they feel better about themselves.

Assuming that this theory is true, it is conceivable that more and more patients are resorting to cosmetic treatments because of the wrinkles seen on the screen that make them look more depressed, towards them and towards others, which makes them feel more depressed.

A dangerous circle is actually created here that feeds itself when the patient sees his own wrinkles and gets a sad mirror image, which causes him to have negative feelings.

This process becomes really dangerous when a person obsessively deals with real or imagined defects.

The zoom makes us more critical of ourselves.

The authors of the article state that spending disproportionate periods of time zooming in can elicit a response of self-criticism and comparison, and from there the road to plastic surgeons is short in order to seek treatment or surgery that they might not have thought of doing before the zoom era.

so what are we doing?

First it is important to know that you can use the zoom without seeing yourself, which is very liberating.

Just click on the three dots of your own image, and choose the option to hide the image.

The rest will look at you as usual, and you them.

In addition, the most important tool available to us is to spread the word that the zoom does not reflect reality.

Both among the public, by publishing articles like this, and also among the treating professionals.

I as a plastic surgery specialist am concerned about the phenomenon.

I come across a number of cases each week of patients seeking unnecessary treatments, and have had to spend a lot of time explaining to them why they do not need any treatment.

Despite the much time I devote to the subject, I recommend all members of the profession to adopt this line, as it is part of our commitment to patients, as doctors and of course as human beings.
