(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, 02 DEC - A group of experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Cdc), the US health agency against diseases, recommended with 13 votes against 1 to be the first to vaccinate guests and employees against Covid-19 nursing homes and health workers who are more exposed to the risk of contagion.

The head of the CDC Robert Redfiled should decide by today whether to accept the proposals.

States are not required to follow the panel's directions, but they usually do.

The final decision, however, rests with the governors, who are confronted with their health leaders.

The only member of the group who voted against is Dr Helen Talbot, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University, who expressed reservations about listing long-term nursing home guests among the priority groups because she believes vaccine safety is not a priority. it has been studied in this particular segment of the population.

The roughly three million nursing home guests and caregivers who follow them are a relatively clear target: 39% of coronavirus deaths have occurred in these facilities, according to the New York Times.

But states will have to choose which of the 21 million healthcare workers will have the precedence for the first doses of the vaccine.

Pfizer and Moderna have estimated that a maximum of 22.5 million Americans will be able to divaccinate by the end of the year, each with two doses injected weeks apart. (ANSA).
