Justice Minister William Barr has appointed John Durham as special prosecutor to continue the counter-investigation into Russiagate's origins under the new Biden administration.
The AP reports.
The investigation was prompted by Donald Trump, who believed Russiagate was a plot by the Obama administration against his election.
Barr said in an interview with the Associated Press that his department found no evidence of electoral fraud so widespread as to change the outcome of the presidential election.
Barr, one of Donald Trump's main allies in government, explained how the judiciary and the FBI have been working to investigate specific allegations of election fraud in recent weeks. But so far - he added - no large-scale evidence has been discovered that could change the result of the polls that gave the victory to Joe Biden. Barr last month issued a directive to all the country's attorneys general urging them to investigate all "relevant allegations" that were reported. His statements now displace the White House from where Trump continues to contest the outcome of the elections by calling them rigged and not recognizing Biden's victory.
