In Hagen, the police pulled a driver out of traffic who was transporting a mattress lying loosely on the car roof.

Only the passenger's hand protruding from the side window was supposed to secure the cargo packed with plastic and cardboard, as the police said about the incident on Monday.

"That this would not have been enough to protect the parcel from falling in the event of severe braking or an accident was more than clear," the message said.

The 25-year-old driver and his passenger then had to carry the mattress to their destination.

The police forbade the journey and issued a warning.
