(ANSA) - NEW YORK, 02 DEC - The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, denounced the "suicidal" failure in the fight against global warming and said that recovery from the coronavirus pandemic could be the opportunity for humanity to reset to save the planet.
"Humanity is declaring war on nature, this is suicide," he stressed in a speech at Columbia University in New York.
"Next year we have the opportunity to stop education and begin healing. Recovery from Covid and the rehabilitation of our planet must be two sides of the same coin."
Guterres called for a reduction in the use of fossil fuels and said the climate summit scheduled for December 12 for the fifth anniversary of the Paris agreement should map out a new way forward.
The secretary-general welcomed the first commitments to carbon neutrality from China, the European Union, Japan and South Korea, and hopes the movement will go global: "Every country, city, financial institution and company should adopt plans for the transition to net zero emissions. by 2050 ".
