Covid-19 is different for everyone.

With mild corona courses, there are at least seven different groups of symptoms, as researchers found.

• Coughing, loss of the sense of taste and smell or shortness of breath are symptoms that can indicate a coronavirus infection. *

• In a new study, researchers at the Medical University of Vienna have brought structure to the series of possible corona symptoms.

What symptoms are typical for Covid-19?

This question has been preoccupying citizens and researchers around the world since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the meantime it has been proven that the loss of the sense of smell and taste is an indication that you have been infected with coronaviruses.

A wide range of other complaints can be associated with the disease - but they don't have to.

There are rare cases in which patients complain of severe abdominal pain or itchy wheals on the upper body.

As a rule, however, medical professionals observe other symptoms.

Viennese researchers have now summarized in a study

which different forms of disease are common with a mild Covid-19 course - there are seven different options, according to the researchers.

Seven corona symptom groups with mild Covid-19 courses

For their study, immunologist Winfried Pickl, allergist Rudolf Valenta and their team evaluated the data from 109 Covid-19 patients and compared them with a healthy control group.

The patients were on the mend - they were not among the serious Covid-19 cases.

According to the researchers, various tests were able to prove that various symptoms of Covid-19 are related and occur in so-called symptom groups

Viennese researchers identified the

following

seven corona symptom groups

:

• Flu-like symptoms (with fever, chills, tiredness and cough)

• Runny nose symptoms (with a runny nose, sneezing, dry throat, and stuffy nose)

• Joint and muscle pain

• Inflammation of the eyes and mucous membranes

• Lung problems (with pneumonia and shortness of breath)

• Gastrointestinal problems (with diarrhea, nausea and accompanied by headache) 

• Loss of smell and taste

"In the latter group, we were also able to determine that more people with a young immune system are affected by the loss of smell and taste," quotes the German international broadcaster and immunologist Winfried Pickl.

However, the age of the immune system is not measured by age, but by the number of immune cells, also called T lymphocytes, that have recently emigrated from the thymus gland.

That means we were able to clearly differentiate systemic (e.g. group 1 and 3) from organ-specific course forms (e.g. group 6 and 7) of the primary Covid-19 disease,

However, according to the scientist, there could also be an overlap of the symptoms.

However, Pickl's doctors point out that connections between the various symptom groups and the body's own defenses can be established:

If Covid-19 is associated with a high fever, this could indicate a comparatively long immunity

, as the immunological memory is particularly activated.

When patients complain of a loss of taste and smell, the body responds with higher levels of T lymphocytes.

The Viennese researchers see their study as making an important contribution to the development of vaccines.
