"It is worring me?

The logic of the last days of attack-defense and that nobody takes the time to listen to the other.

Thus,

culturally transforming

Argentine

rugby

can be very complex

”.

Likewise, Raúl Calvo Soler is an optimist: he believes that neither the old and abominable tweets of members of Los Pumas, nor the repercussions of the murder of Fernando Báez Sosa will be able to overshadow the work that he and a team of 20 people (from Funrepar) have been doing to implement the Rugby 2030 program, a plan of the

Argentine Rugby Union

(UAR) to address what has been shaming the sector for some time:

violence

from members of this community, a circumstance that results in

a negative image

from the stereotypical “Argentine rugby”.

The objective of the talk was to obtain

details of the progress of this program

.

But whoever wants concrete results will be out of luck.

On the one hand, due to the limitations imposed by the coronavirus.

Some instances "would have required presence," explained the expert.

On the other, it seems too early to ask for "effects" of a long-term program that seeks to modify, at the root, ingrained preconceptions within and outside of rugby, and the naturalized behaviors that derive from them.

“Today,

more than results, we think about processes

: the important thing is to confirm that the process we are adopting is the right one.

I think it is, ”he said confidently.

But if one insists on understanding "what has been done so far" it is because

the skin is twitching

from the

series of unfortunate events

that starred the world of rugby in 2020.

Raúl Calvo Soler directs from Funrepar and the UAR the "Rugby 2030" awareness program.

The most relevant is the murder, last summer, of Fernando Báez Sosa, for which eight rugby players are detained who, if the recent request of the prosecutor Verónica Zamboni is fulfilled, could go to trial for “

homicide aggravated by their treachery and for the premeditated contest of two or more people

”.

This crime symbolically condenses a type of violence that, without falling into banal generalizations, seems to return again and again.

In second place are the despicable posts by

Santiago Socino, Pablo Matera and Guido Petti

captured almost a decade ago, but suddenly spread now, in response to a fact that, like it or not, seems absurdly disjointed: Los Pumas' lukewarm homage to Diego Maradona.

It would take a while to pull this uncomfortable thread, which leads to the complex borders of the "

thought police

" and the (transversal to Maradona, the Pumas and all) "culture of cancellation."

The truth is that for Calvo Soler, “

the solution is not punitive

.

Nor, a sanctioning response ”.

On the papers

“The horizon for 2030 is to have implemented at least

34 programs

in all rugby clubs in the country.

Four were concluded: the first is a

participation

program

: the construction of a space that did not exist, where the

25 rugby club unions

are represented

.

One or two members attend per union and meetings are every 10-15 days.

Several problems are debated and there is participation from the point of view of ideas, ”explained Calvo Soler.

Did you know that restorative philosophy is a way to resolve conflicts?

The restorative philosophy is a way of understanding the way in which people relate to each other.

“The second is an

awareness

program

 through

videos

with protagonists of the environment, such as the female rugby captain, a former Puma, the president of the UAR and a current Puma.

There were also videos of local referents who managed the different unions in the country.

There were 30 films available on

social networks to raise awareness within the community

”.

In addition, there was “a

communication

program

, meetings with the communication managers of the clubs”.

Because, for Calvo Soler, there is "a theme" with the

language installed in rugby

: “Language builds reality.

If we teach a player that it's

not about '

killing the other

'

, but someone from the rostrum yells'

kill him

'and the media writes'

the team almost destroyed him.

..', we have a problem".

The last program is the most interesting: a long

survey

aimed at players over 15 years of age, coaches, managers and others in the environment, with 130 questions.

They aspired to do it in person to 130,000 people, but they only reached just over

20,000

.

Do you know how to go from the sporting conflict and its scope, to violence?

.

"Although the data is not processed, there are interesting things: the majority of the players (half of the respondents) recognize and identify that Argentine society not linked to rugby has a

negative perception of them

. This could help in the transformation. Also , they are convinced that these things can be changed. They admit that it is important to have

friends who do not play rugby

. And both male and female players perceive rugby, not as a men's sport, but as a sport. There is no logic closed. You can go further. "

Pilot test

“During the pandemic we also did programs outside of this planning, which fuel the transformation: blood donation, a program related to food and clothing in areas with complicated situations, and a program of boys who spoke to older adults locked up by the quarantine, ”the lawyer shared.

There are currently

four programs in "pilot" mode

: "We test them in about 10 clubs, evaluate the results, correct and then move them to the national level."

He said that "one of them is dedicated to boys from 6 to 9 years old, focused on the recognition of

competences and skills

; another, on

discrimination and stereotypes

, for boys from 10 to 12 years old, in order to teach them to observe and observe yourself, to have critical thinking ".

Another "combines the

athlete with the family

... because it is not that the family leaves the boy in the club and the club educates him. Nor does the family only pay the fee."

In addition, he added, they will try to continue (if the coronavirus allows it) a plan that addresses the "school-club" relationship.

In the

next six months they

plan to launch other programs.

The most notable are “one of addictions and the complex question of

training

: many players perceive an asymmetry.

A

relationship of power

rather than influence.

You have to transform the way the coach connects with his team ”.

Finally, a few lines for what is "the matrix" of these initiatives: the theory of

restorative justice

.

“In every conflict situation, the

logic of the trench

wins

: attack and defense

.

The restaurativists propose an instance of

recognition of the other

 to respect him.

I may not like rugby, but I respect that others do.

And I admit that sometimes I don't handle my evaluation of those who love rugby well.

This is taught.

Then there is the

responsibility

: respect the other and take responsibility for what one generates. "

Finally, "a

leading role

is required

, to finally reach

restoration

. It is not paying or compensating. It is the ability that one has to rebuild a damaged relationship. This type of dynamic is possible."
