Istat: in October -473,000 employed per year

In October, the number of employees decreased slightly compared to September (-0.1% equal to 13,000 units less) but decreased significantly on October 2019 due to the pandemic with 473,000 fewer people working. (HANDLE)


In October, the number of employees decreased slightly compared to September (-0.1% equal to 13,000 units less) but decreased significantly on October 2019 due to the pandemic with 473,000 fewer people working.

Istat notes this, underlining that the decline is mainly due to the collapse of independent and fixed-term work, while permanent employees have increased (+61,000) also thanks to the blocking of layoffs.

Compared to February, a total of 420,000 employees were lost.

In the quarter August-October 2020 there was an increase of 115,000 employees over the previous quarter. 


The unemployment rate of young people between 15 and 24 years old returns to above 30%

: in October the rate rises to 30.3% with an increase of 0.6 points compared to September and 2.6 points compared to October 2019. Istat notes it.

The unemployed in this age group are 422,000 with an increase of 2,000 units on September and 6,000 on the same month of the previous year.

The unemployment rate between the ages of 15 and 64 in October was stable at 9.8% compared to September while growing by 0.3 percentage points compared to October 2019

Istat notes this, underlining that the unemployed in Italy are 2.479.000 with an increase of 11.0000 units on September and 43.000 units on October 2019. Inactivity has increased given that in the face of the pandemic and the reduction in activity many have stopped actively looking for work.

Inactive people between the ages of 15 and 64 are 257,000 more than in October 2019 and reach 13,572,000 units with a rate of 35.5% (+0.8 points).
