South Africa: allegations of fraud in the lottery - 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 win

It was drawn live on television, but many players couldn't believe their eyes. In South Africa, a remarkable combination of numbers brought the jackpot. Now there are allegations of fraud.

Winning the lottery is extremely unlikely - that shouldn't be a secret.

But what has now happened in South Africa's national lottery goes one better.

On Tuesday the following sequence of numbers was drawn: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and the 10 as the »Power Ball«, a kind of additional number.

The British Guardian reports on the process.

According to the lottery organization, 20 tickets cracked the jackpot.

"Congratulations to the 20 winners of the Power Ball draw," said the organizer's Twitter account.

And further: "These numbers may seem unexpected, but numerous players have chosen this combination."

Now, however, accusations of fraud are particularly loud in social media - both because of the number combination and because of the many winners.

The draw took place live on television.

In this form of lottery, players choose five numbers out of 50 and a bonus number out of 20.

The odds of hitting the jackpot are one in 42,375,200, as reported by the British BBC.

Each of the 20 winners will now receive the equivalent of around 305,000 euros.

A further 79 tickets had the correct main numbers, but not the 10 as an additional number.

You get the equivalent of a comparatively manageable 340 euros.

The country's National Lotto Commission has since got involved in the case.

From there it was said that six consecutive numbers had never hit the jackpot and an investigation would be made.

Spokesman Ndivhuho Mafela told the AFP news agency: "If anything goes wrong, we'll make it public."

Huge profits go to German tipsters

Lottery winnings also made headlines in Germany recently.

Not because of any allegations of fraud, but because of the enormous sums of money.

At the end of November, for example, a lottery player from Lower Saxony won around 61 million euros in the Eurojackpot lottery.

It is the highest winnings ever achieved in a lottery in Lower Saxony.

In May, a young lottery player from Bavaria won a 90 million jackpot.

The lucky winner didn't get in touch about a month later.
