An “Umbrella Academy” actor reveals his gender identity online.
The reactions from Netflix and other Twitter users couldn't be more different.
"The Umbrella Academy" star Elliot Page (Vanya)
has decided to take a decisive step: The actor has spoken openly about his gender identity on Twitter.
Although Page was born in a woman's body and was previously known under the name
Ellen Page
, he would like to be
addressed
with the pronoun
"he"
or the plural
"she"
from now
on.
The big change comes from the performer now known as Elliot seeing himself as
transgender
.
It has not been easy for Page to address this issue online.
He reveals that he is afraid of revealing his identity publicly because of "the hatred, the jokes and the threats of violence".
He referred to statistics that show that the discrimination against gays, lesbians, queers and other members of the
LJBTQ community is
particularly high.
Page's fears were promptly confirmed: Under his tweet there are
many malicious comments
about his coming out.
At the same time, fellow actors and Netflix * respond with understanding and motivating words.
"Umbrella Academy" star speaks about gender identity - and receives terrifying reactions
For a better understanding:
Elliot Page
doesn't necessarily consider himself a man because of the choice of a man's name.
In
many cases,
identification as
transgender
means that people prefer a gender
that does not correspond to their physical gender
.
At the same time it could be that they
choose
neither the female nor the male gender
.
Since Page would like to be addressed with the pronouns “he” and “she” (plural), the performer sees himself
as a man and at the same time as gender-neutral
.
Regardless of this, the Twitter announcement by the “Umbrella Academy” star met with some harsh criticism.
Occasionally, commentators accused him of merely trying to attract attention.
Others, however, do not understand Page's decision to
freely choose his gender
: “Inhuman.
Disgusting.
Not correct.
But hey, it's 2020. That will be considered normal, although it is not at all, "writes a Twitter user, for example.

Elliot Page
with understanding words

WE LOVE YOU, ELLIOT!
We can't wait

The tweet from
Netflix also
confirms that the actor
will return
as
Vanya
in the third season of "The Umbrella Academy".
In the wake of Pages' announcement, discussions sparked online whether a new actress should take on the female role.
Alternatively
, Vanya could also change her gender
.
However, insiders are said to have confirmed to Variety
that the figure is still female
.
After Pages outing as
transgender
, the performer can still authentically embody the role.
