What is aesthetics?

Aesthetics has two components - proportions and symmetry.

At the scientific level, aesthetic principles pertain to symmetry and relationships (proportions).

That is, when we look at a person, the most jarring thing is asymmetry, such as one big eye in relation to one small eye, and that is aesthetics in the absolute sense of the word.

The second principle is proportions, if someone has a very beautiful nose but 40 percent larger than its optimal symmetrical size in relation to the face - then he loses his grace.

Conversely, when the nose maintains the right proportion, its education is even more distinct.

Are there gender differences when it comes to aesthetic principles?

Certainly, there are aesthetic principles pertaining to gender differences.

What is perceived as aesthetic in women is considered less aesthetic in men, for example: a square jaw line is considered more masculine while a rounded jaw line is considered more feminine.

Let's continue with the eyebrows - convex eyebrows are perceived as more feminine compared to straight eyebrows that are considered masculine, and the same goes for the lips, which are full are feminine, and thin are masculine.

In the world of dentistry we know how people would like to look, and what is considered aesthetic in the eyes of most people, so as dentists we are interested in creating an aesthetic look, which defines the "beauty" of the mouth.

We create this look using the same scientific principles.

Thus, for example, the upper lip should constitute two-thirds of its height relative to the lower lip, since lips of the same thickness do not realize an ideal proportion as it is perceived in the human eye.

What is the ideal smile according to the principles of aesthetics?

There are principles concerning the aesthetics of the teeth.

For example, we know that in the smile line the teeth should follow the lower lip, and when there is abrasion of the teeth due to age and there is no correlation between the lower lip and the tooth line, there may be an impression of older appearance, so many times, we use dental treatments like porcelain veneer to Preserve this principle and thus create a younger look.

The teeth should follow the lower lip.

Male teeth have a more rectangular appearance with pointed fangs, while female teeth have an oval appearance characterized by rounded corners and non-pointed and unstressed fangs, and even there there is room to adjust the shape of the reconstruction to the gender.

Are there any aesthetic principles pertaining to teeth whitening treatments?

Today the public has a tendency to whiten their teeth, as the brighter appearance is perceived as dome and younger.

But care must be taken, as we want to give the teeth an aesthetic rather than a grotesque appearance, so the color of the teeth must be matched to the color of the patient's skin, teeth and gums.

We prefer to avoid excessive bleaching that can create an unnatural look.

What is the most important aesthetic principle in dentistry?

The most important aesthetic principle is harmony, and in order to produce harmony it is important to maintain the midline - through the nose, the upper lip, the two front teeth and the chin.

We tend to look for symmetry, this is one of the most basic characteristics in non-verbal communication between person and person.

If, for example, there is a deviation of three cm in the dental bridge - then we have lost harmony and symmetry. This is the reason why, sometimes, preliminary treatments are required to achieve the ideal smile such as: gum surgery, orthodontic treatments, or even porcelain veneers, so the right approach It is multi-disciplinary, characterized by a combination of diagnostic and performance capabilities and tools to achieve the aesthetic result the patient is aiming for.

So what is the perfect smile that so many people want?

"Perfect smile" is a problematic, pretentious and sometimes misleading phrase - as it is a subjective matter. The key to the success of the treatment is in coordinating expectations regarding the client's needs and the moves that must be made or can be made in order to achieve the desired result, after all, in the end, we all want our customers to be satisfied. I prefer to avoid unrealistic expectations or promises. The same subjective interpretation of perfect and imperfect, and therefore there is a need to create a clear dialogue with the patient to understand his requests and needs and adapt them to the treatment plan.
