A Jewish hospital doctor in California caused a stir with his emotional description of how he treated a corona patient tattooed with Nazi symbols.
"The swastika was emblazoned on his chest," wrote Taylor Nichols on Twitter.
"SS tattoos and other insignia that were previously hidden by the shirt were now visible to everyone in the room."
He prepared an intubation of the patient with an African-American nurse and an Asian-born airway specialist, Nichols said.
“The symbols of hatred on his body openly and proudly proclaimed his views.
We all knew what he thought of us.
What value he attaches to our lives. "
The emergency medic, who works in a hospital near the California capital Sacramento, who published his tweets on Monday and was subsequently interviewed by several US media outlets, also described his mixed feelings about the man’s treatment.
"I see the SS tattoo and wonder what he might think about being treated by a Jewish doctor, or how he would look after me if the roles were reversed."
"Don't let me die, Doctor," the elderly and drugged man pleaded, Nichols wrote.
"I assured him that we would all work hard to take care of him and to keep him alive as well as possible." But it was the first time that he noticed that he had felt "hesitation" and "conflict." reports the doctor.
"The pandemic has exhausted me."
Nichols later told the San Francisco Chronicle that when he saw the Nazi symbols on the patient's body, he initially felt "no pity."
According to Nichols, he does not know whether the man, who apparently had hardly any teeth after a long period of drug use, survived his corona infection.
More than 100,000 corona patients in US hospitals
The USA is currently seeing a dramatic increase in corona infections.
Most recently, around 195,000 new infections and more than 2,700 deaths were confirmed within 24 hours.
For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, there are more than 100,000 corona patients in US hospitals.
According to the Johns Hopkins University, more than 13.9 million infections have now been confirmed and more than 273,000 people died as a result of an infection.
These are by far the highest numbers in the world.
