(ANSA) - LONDON, DECEMBER 4 - A clash took place in the conservative executive led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the opening of the prestigious English college of Eton preparudentesse.

To propose it, going against the centennial tradition of the private institute, was in an interview with BBC Radio by the same Minister of Education, Gavin Williamson: "It would be an important step forward to accept the registrations of the girls", he affirmed.

A controversy was immediately unleashed entirely within the government party, with the reaction of the most extremist wing led by Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Minister of Relations with the Parliament and former Etonian of iron.

"I would like my daughter to go there, but I think it works very well as it is," he said in a speech in the House of Commons.

10 Downing Street has maintained a certain equidistance, effectively defending the status quo.

A spokesperson pointed out that same-sex schools are important but the government would support Eton if he changed his policies.

The school, near Windsor in Berkshire (Southern England), was founded in 1440 by Henry VI and Prime Minister Johnson is just the latest in a long line of Ethonians who have become heads of government in the UK: among the other 20 remember David Cameron, Harold Macmillan and WilliamGladstone.
