"Alien Worlds": Netflix's UFO Series

2020-12-07T01:09:17.335Z

The platform offers four episodes between fiction and documentary around the possible life on another planet. Astonishing.

What would life be like on another planet?

This is the question posed by "Alien Worlds", an unidentified visual object that has just landed on Netflix.

In four episodes, the British mini-series oscillates between documentary and science fiction, and thus outlines a new world.

We discover in each part the celestial flora and fauna of a purely fictional planet, through computer-generated images that seem to come straight from the film “Avatar”.

In detailed and colorful animation, a world is revealed.

Lush vegetation, hostile weather conditions, and above all a myriad of strange alien beings far from the cliché of little green men.

These unreal sequences invite visitors to dream of a new field of possibilities.

Aerial imaginaries punctuated by more down to earth segments.

The series gives the floor to several renowned biologists and astronomers, including Didier Queloz, Nobel Prize winner in physics in 2019. Fascinating encounters which reveal both scientific principles already known on Earth and their potential applications on other planets .

The codes of animal documentaries

By freely drawing inspiration from the codes of animal documentaries, a web is woven between fiction and reality.

In the air of the imaginary planet of Atlas, we come across predatory insects that dive on their prey, like a hawk would on Earth.

A delicate balance is thus formed between terrestrial animals and celestial counterparts, when we discover how these creatures could be born, survive and even evolve in more brutal conditions, millions of light years from our solar system.

Netflix is making the daring bet of an assumed duality between documentary and science fiction, brilliantly told by actress Sophie Okonedo.

Carried by an atypical animation, we tend to find ourselves strangely invested in the survival of these yet fictitious creatures.

The one-on-one meetings with the experts are carefully selected.

Only downside: a ritornello of life cycles of dozens of creatures, although singular, tends to become repetitive.
