Died this Wednesday, he had obtained three stars in the Michelin Guide with his restaurant L'Espérance, located in Saint-Père in Yonne.

A figure of French gastronomy.

Chef Marc Meneau, three-star Michelin guide and best French cook of the year 1983 by Gault and Millau, died this Wednesday at the age of 77.

According to France 3, the causes of this disappearance are not yet known.

It was after hotel studies that he learned to cook as an autodidact so that he could take over his mother's café-grocery store in Saint-Père sous Vézelay (Yonne) in the 1960s.

A few years later, in 1972, the Michelin guide awarded it its first star.

Marc Meneau then moved to a larger establishment, which he called L'Espérance.

It was in this restaurant that he would then experience many other successes.

He thus won a second Michelin star in 1975, followed by a third in 1983. This last year also marks a sort of consecration for him, since still in 1983 he was elected Best French Chef and obtained a score of 19/20 in the Gault and Millau.

The passage in the 2000s is more complicated for those who in particular invented some signature dishes (the cromesquis of foie gras, the oyster in seawater jelly), since Marc Meneau loses his third star, before recovering it in 2004 Three years later, due to financial problems, he was struck off the Michelin guide for one year.

After a second judicial liquidation in 2015, L'Espérance was taken over by the Hotel & Food Disrpt Partners group.

Outside the kitchen, but never far away, Marc Meneau had also published many cookbooks and worked as a culinary consultant on several films, notably “Marie-Antoinette” by Sofia Coppola.

He was also named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, then Knight of the National Order of Merit, and finally Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1998.
