Iran hanged former opposition leader Ruhollah Zam, who had lived in exile in France and participated in demonstrations against the Iranian regime.
State television announced it.
"'Counter-revolutionary' Zam was hanged after his sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court due to the" seriousness of the crimes "committed against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the television said.
Zam, who ran the opposition news site Amadnews, was accused of spying on the intelligence services of "the US, France, Israel and a country in the region" in order to bring down the Islamic Republic. He was also convicted of acting in ways that undermined Iran's security inside the country and abroad, by spreading lies and damaging the country's economic system. Zam had been active during protests in Iran between 2017 and 2018. He lived in France but was arrested by Iranian security forces during a visit to Iraq and returned to the country in October 2019.
