Single-use plastic pollutes the environment.

Everyone knows that this is bad.

Nevertheless, a lot of rubbish still ends up in nature.

An environmental initiative has collected rubbish from around the world and has now made clear demands on the biggest polluters.

  • The

    Break Free From Plastic

    initiative

has again examined which companies distribute the most packaging waste in the world.

  • Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestlé

    are the sad winners.

  • But who is responsible -

    the producers or the consumers

    ?

Munich - Plastic packaging from

Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestlé

pollutes the environment the most worldwide.

This was the result of a global study by the environmental initiative Break Free From Plastic.

The movement has been organizing worldwide garbage collection campaigns once a year in 2018 and thus determines which companies put the most plastic waste into the environment.

In 2020, 14,734 volunteers were deployed in 55 countries - despite the corona pandemic.

In doing so, they collected

346,494 pieces

.

Around two thirds of these could be assigned to a producer.

From this analysis, it is clear:

Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestlé

are the biggest polluters.

And not just since this year.

The three companies also topped the list in 2019 and 2018.

BREAKING: @cocacola, @PepsiCo, @Nestle, @Unilever & @MDLZ are the TOP 5 corporate plastic polluters of 2020. It's the 3rd time they've been on the TOP 10 list!

We demand REAL accountability.

Environment campaign: Most of the garbage found by Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestlé

The work of

Break Free From Plastic is

not

a solid documentation of all the plastic waste that is in circulation around the world

.

But the initiative shows that the products of large companies and their garbage are spreading worldwide.

The organization wants to draw attention to the topic and hold companies

accountable

.

However, it is hardly surprising that internationally successful companies appear in the top ten list.

With increasing sales figures, the amount of packaging waste naturally also increases.

In addition, it is not up to the producers, but rather to the decisions of the consumers.

However, it is also clear that if

Coca-Cola were to

reduce the plastic consumption of all beverage bottles by only a fraction, that would have an enormous impact.

The largest producers therefore also bear a decisive responsibility for their packaging waste.

Environment initiative: producers have to take responsibility

The organization therefore appeals to

producers

: “The 'Break Free From Plastic' movement calls on companies to urgently reduce the amount of single-use plastic they use.

The biggest polluters need to disclose how much plastic they use and then set clear, measurable targets for the amount of single-use plastic they produce.

After all, they have to reinvent their product delivery systems in order to avoid single-use plastic altogether, ”the report says.

In

Germany

, too, there was a so-called "Brand Audit" of Break Free From Plastic for the first time - a collection campaign.

24 volunteers collected 5213 plastic parts

.

The result: the environmentalists found garbage from Haribo, Mars and Nestlé most frequently.

Due to the small number of elements collected, this does not necessarily mean that these companies are actually responsible for most of the waste in Germany.
