(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 13 - It would have been the Etruscans, many centuries before the city became a Roman colony, founding Pompeii, giving the city its shape, organizing its streets "following the sky and the stars" as they had already done for Tarquinia, Veio, Cerveteri, to build his first sanctuaries, on the road that led from the city to the port, a hub for commercial traffic.

It is the hypothesis to which the studies on the material unearthed in the last excavation campaigns in progress in the archaeological park patrimony of humanity seem to be brought "with great insistence" and which will allow after centuries to solve the mystery about the origins of the city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in the 79 AD.

To talk about it the director of the archaeological park Massimo Osanna, from September also at the helm of the general management of the Mibact museums, who together with the archaeologist CarloRescigno, academic of the Lincei and professor of classical archeology at the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, presented the new discoveries at the Academy dei Lincei, in a round table with Fausto Zevi, professor emeritus of the history of Greek and Roman art at the Sapienza in Rome and academician of the Lincei, Carmine Ampolo, emeritus of Greek history at the Normale di Pisa, Pier Giovanni Guzzo, for many years at the helm of the Scavidi Pompeii , with the introduction of the academic Roberto Antonelli.

The hypothesis, says Osanna, is that of a city that was founded and built in the space of a few decades by a group of people, in part perhaps also freed slaves, a "dilingual and Etruscan culture" community which, however, built walls, houses and , makes use of "local workers", bells and therefore influenced by the melting pot of cultures that then animated the Campania region, from the Italics to the Greeks.

A rich and powerful city, up to a tragic stop.

Which arrived in 474 BC, due to the political consequences of the naval battle of Cuma, which the Greeks won against the Etruscans.

Pompeii, which in that "international chessboard" was lined up on the side of the fatherland, in fact disappeared after that battle, perhaps even abandoned by its inhabitants, for almost a century.
