More and more signs suggest that the downward trend that the transmission of the coronavirus has followed in Spain for five weeks has ended.

If Friday was the first day in a month with an increase in incidence, this Monday was the first since last November 2 in which cases have risen compared to the previous one.

Although epidemiologists are cautious and enemies of establishing trends until the data are more consolidated, the rise this Monday has been significant: 21,309 new cases since Friday, 3,628 positive more than last Monday and 1,330 more than the previous one, with a cumulative incidence in the last 14 days of 193.6 diagnoses per 100,000 inhabitants.

Since Friday, the statistic incorporates 389 more deaths.

In addition, the percentage of hospital beds occupied by coronavirus patients has also risen slightly, standing at 9.61%, after an uninterrupted fall since last November 16.

The last bridge of the Constitution has probably not had to do with these figures: less than a week has passed and infections take about 10 days to reach the statistics since they occur.

In the opinion of Rafael M. Ortí Lucas, president of the Spanish Society of Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Hygiene (Sempsph), this rise surely has more to do with the great commercial activity that began between the end of November and the beginning of December and in the relaxation of restrictions in some autonomous communities.

Ortí Lucas already takes the change in trend for granted and sees with pessimism that the fall in positives at the doors of Christmas has been truncated, which would have been favorable for the foreseeable rebound after the holidays to be less.

"If we have these small spikes now, I don't know what will happen at Christmas," he reflects.

Fernando Simón, director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, has referred to the rise in data as "a stabilization in the continuous decline" that had been observed.

"It is probably due to the reduction of some measures before the Constitution bridge," he said.

Simón has referred to the situation as "delicate" because it remains to be clarified how the Constitution and Christmas bridge impacts the transmission, which is at the gates, which will be reached with a much higher incidence than the one faced in summer.

"The risk of saturation of the system by any small increase is higher than we would like," he said.
