(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 14 - As announced yesterday by the columns of the Republic, Corrado Augias this morning went to the French embassy in Rome to return the Legion of honor received from France in 2007, as a sign of protest against the decision of the Elysée to assign the same secret recognition to Egyptian President Al Sisi despite the responsibility of the North African state that emerged in the case of the killing of the researcher Giulio Regeni.
"The ambassador said he understands my gesture and does not share it - Augias explained - I recalled that Gaddafi in 2009 in Rome was received with the band and flags, but he was not given any decoration, and it was a state visit . It is one of the most prestigious decorations, because it is an order that recognizes special merits, on the military level, but also civil and social rights. Al Sisi, who has such an ambiguous position, could be received with all the honor of state but without that additional recognition. The ambassador reiterated that France will always be at the forefront of human rights. It was a bitter and cordial conversation. Al Sisi is objectively simple, as head of state, of criminal behavior committed by his subordinates ".
