"Canceled! The municipality of Rio announces that the New Year's party is canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic. The decision was taken out of respect for the victims and to protect everyone's health", reads the comunecarioca's Twitter profile.
Rio de Janeiro's New Year's Eve is one of the most famous in the world and attracts millions of visitors from all over the globe to witness the evocative spectacle of fireworks over the ocean.
Last September, the municipality of Rio decided to postpone the famous carnival parades to next July due to the pandemic.
The state of Rio de Janeiro has seen an increase in infections in the last month and is the one with the highest death rate in Brazil: 6.1%.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there are 23,740 official levies and almost 390,000 infections.
